Hollywood filmmaker Oliver Stone<\/a> put in a smiley appearance as he attended the Victory Day military parade in Russia<\/a> on Friday.<\/p>\n

The esteemed US director<\/a>, 78, is known for tackling various subjects, including war and politics, in his work, while he\u2019s also made dramas and biopics.<\/p>\n

With three Academy Awards<\/a>, a Bafta, an Emmy<\/a>, and five Golden Globes to his name, it\u2019s no surprise he drew attention during the celebrations, given that he\u2019s behind some of the most iconic movies.<\/p>\n

The military parade took place in Moscow for the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union\u2019s victory over Nazi Germany<\/a> during World War II.<\/p>\n

Meticulously choreographed with fine detail, the parade occurred in the capital\u2019s Red Square and was attended by\u00a0over 20 global leaders,\u00a0including China\u2019s President\u00a0Xi Jinping and Brazil\u2019s Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva. Leaders from the United States and Africa were also present.<\/p>\n

Stone was in high spirits among the crowd, dressed in smart attire of a white shirt, red tie, and camel coat.<\/p>\n

He also shielded his eyes with a pair of red sunglasses and added the black and orange Saint George\u2019s ribbon to his lapel.<\/p>\n

Also among attendees yesterday was American actor Steven Seagal. The 73-year-old was dressed in all black as he attempted to blend in with the pack of spectators.<\/p>\n

Stone has an extensive military background himself, having risen to notoriety in the late 1980s for his movies about the Vietnam War, in which he also participated as an infantry soldier.<\/p>\n

The acclaimed director served from 1967 to 1968 in the\u00a025th Infantry\u00a0and\u00a01st Cavalry\u00a0Divisions and was wounded twice in action.<\/p>\n

He is the proud owner of several honours awarded for his service, including a Bronze Star for valour, an Air Medal, and an Oak Leaf Cluster to recognise the two wounds. <\/p>\n

Speaking last November during a Vietnam at 50 lecture, Stone reflected on his decision to enlist in the army, spending a year in South Vietnam as a teacher but leaving with more questions.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0feel like my education was complete.\u00a0I was still confused about what was going on because I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0understand\u00a0all of\u00a0the politics. I went back because I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0feel\u00a0that\u00a0I knew enough. I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0want to be a fraud.\u2019<\/p>\n

He continued: \u2018I felt like I had to\u00a0go to\u00a0this war to understand it. I had to go back. I had already seen a bit of it from the fringes, but I went right into the heart of it in\u00a0\u201867.\u2019<\/p>\n

Several years following his return from war, he would struggle with his mental health, but managed to overcome the challenges and attend film school.<\/p>\n

Stone went on to depict the brutality of war in his Vietnam trilogy, which included 1986\u2019s Platoon, which starred Johnny Depp and Willem Dafoe; Born on the Fourth of July (1989), starring Tom Cruise; and Heaven & Earth (1993), with Tommy Lee Jones.<\/p>\n

Platoon, specifically, was, in part, inspired by\u00a0Stone\u2019s\u00a0own\u00a0experiences on the frontlines. It won four Academy Awards, including best picture.<\/p>\n

The Oscar-winning best director is also behind controversial flicks such as The Putin Interviews (2017), having hailed the Russian dictator<\/a> as a \u2018great leader\u2019 for the country<\/a> and a \u2018very refined individual\u2019.<\/p>\n

off\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Other divisive films from Stone include those that critics have used to accuse him of promoting conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n<p>For example, 1991\u2019s JFK examined the\u00a0investigation\u00a0into the\u00a0assassination of John F.
